Steffy Lamps at Frenchman Art MarketStephen Richard is a New Orleans artist and owner of Steffy Lamps, a producer of unique mixed media lamps set in wooden frames. The decorative lamps consist of paper and other materials assembled to beautify the effect of the light.

With IDIYA’s computer controlled laser cutter, Stephen cuts materials precisely based on image files that he created digitally.

When Stephen was 19, he visited Disney World and found inspiration in the suspended sconces of the Animal Kingdom Lodge. That’s when he realized how beautiful light can be. “Years later, I had extra gift wrap from Christmas, and I just held it up to the light and started playing with it, and things gradually got more complex.”

Want to see more of Stephen’s art? Look for Stephen at the Frenchman Art Market, where he also sells flower style lamps made by his wife Seonmi Jin. You can also find his work at I.J. Reily’s in the Marigny. If you are a retailer interested in wholesale or consignment, please feel free to reach out to Stephen.

pinoargote515 years ago, when I first visited the French Quarter I fell in love with the architecture of the city; back then, a friend suggested the idea to replicate the architecture of the houses to be sold, it would be a little facade made of wood, so you could take Nola with you. We tried something but soon the idea faded away but not from my mind, I kept taking pictures of shotgun houses and iron railings every time I could, even buying and reading architecture books devoted to New Orleans. Fast forward to present time, and living permanently in the city, I knew what I wanted to do, I just didn’t have the tools and the know how, I knew there were new technologies available out there. I was surfing the internet when IDIYA entered the picture, the minute I was there (literally), all the pieces came together; a workspace full of tools and technologies that will allow me to finally, fifteen years later, work on the prototype. With the guidance and support from the IDIYA staff, that old dream saw the light, I liked the houses so much that I presented a Creole Townhouse to the Flea Market at the French Market and they approved it to be sold right there, across the street where the idea began. Thanks IDIYA.

The intensive 5-day 40-hour program was coordinated by IDIYA Director of Education, Andrew Winstead, who has 8 years of public education experience in math and science, and started a makerspace at Sci High here in New Orleans.

IDIYA Labs Summer Camp Commences

This summer IDIYA Labs continues its educational programming beyond the school year with 5 weeks of STEAM summer camps.

Wearable Tech – Week 1camp-masksJUN8

We started our summer camp with a week of making wearable tech. Kids fashioned light up gloves and masks. They also made augmented reality (AR) t-shirts. After filming music videos of puppets that they built with scrap electronics, the group cast their music videos onto the AR t-shirts by looking at them through a tablet with a program called Aurasma.

Build a Musical Instrument – Week 2

Otis's guitarAt the second week of camp, kids created didgeridoos and flutes from PVC pipes. This was a great chance to teach the use of measuring tools and talk about our new “saw stop” saw, which defies the logic of power saws by stopping instantly if it comes into contact with skin.

We roped in our CEO Domenic and Shop Manager Joe for a jam session on our mega monolith of assembled musical instruments. Kids finished up the week by incorporating robotics into a capacitive touch sensor piano!

Do you have or know a young one that needs something to do this summer? Sign up for our summer camps and give them a fun, immersive experience that blends science, technology, and art.
