What is a Maker Coach?

A Maker Coach is a manufacturing trade professional involved in specific project assistance and skill instruction. They motivate their clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability. Qualified Maker Coaches recognize their own areas of expertise, but most have experience and general knowledge in multiple areas of Maker development. Our Maker Coaches can either be found directly on the Makerspace floor, interacting with clients or groups of clients, or be called upon when needed.

When do I need a Maker Coach?

On-duty staff will work with all members regarding best practices with machinery, but limit specific help to 5-10 mins in a session. If a client seems to need more direct help, the staff member will recommend a consultation with a Maker Coach. Every aspiring maker has a project that has vexed them, but seems unattainable. It’s one thing to walk into a makerspace, and see all the technology that could deliver the desired results. It’s another thing comprehend how to use all of those tools toward those results. Individual classes can help, but sometimes it helps more to know that there is someone right there with you every step of the way with your specific goals and needs in mind.

What does a Maker Coach Do?

Maker Coaches meet with clients before they begin working with them to gain a better understanding of the client’s goal, like a specific project or just gaining a skill. They may also give clients a tour of the makerspace and show them some of the projects they may do. At this initial meeting, the maker coach may also go over the charges for the one on one services and discuss payment plans.

Maker Coaches devise customized project plans for their clients based on their goals. These plans typically include some small task to hone specific skills, and larger ones that combine several skills. During a maker session, coaches observe their clients performing tasks to ensure they are operating machinery safely and employing good technique. Maker Coaches also give process and material suggestions when they are relevant to the client’s project plan.

A Maker Coach will meet initially with a client in a comfortable setting for a maximum of one hour, to understand the scope of what the client hopes to achieve. During this consultation, the Maker Coach will establish a schedule of sessions and payment plan accordingly.
